Auto theft has surged across Halton Region, according to recent reports from the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS). Chief Stephen Tanner highlighted that over 1,300 vehicles were stolen in 2023, marking a notable increase compared to previous years. Many of these vehicles are high-value models targeted by sophisticated theft rings, often transported out of the country.
In response, HRPS has ramped up its efforts with enhanced patrols, public education campaigns, and the recovery of stolen vehicles. The police successfully retrieved 22 stolen cars traced to Morocco earlier this year, showcasing their commitment to tackling international theft networks. Despite these efforts, authorities urge residents to take precautions, such as using steering wheel locks and secure parking areas.
